BARGEME- REMARKABLE VILLAGE VAR
More than 1000 meters above sea level, the village of Bargème is the highest village in the Var .. It dominates the whole valley and offers an exceptional view of the foothills of the Alps, particularly on the Massif des Maures.
Bargème in the Var, a glorious past
The village is fortified since the 13th century thanks to the construction of ramparts and the castle by the family of Ponteves. a dynasty which for a long time distinguished itself by its cruelty towards the inhabitants who devoted an unlimited hatred to the family. Thus, all the lords over the years perished assassinated and the parliament of Aachen condemned the inhabitants to erect a chapel: Our Lady of Espain. The land then goes to Foulques which by interrupted descent will remain with the family until 2008, date at which the castle is bought by the municipality.
The castle devastated by the wars of religion presents only the elements of external defenses with round towers and a square dungeon. On the esplanade of the castle, the small chapel of expiation of the inhabitants, Our lady of 7 pains (of espain) awaits you in the face of the simplicity. In the southern part of the town, one can still see intact the walled enclosure with its ramparts and two doors dating from the fourteenth century. At the top of the village, the chapel Saint Nicolas, fully restored, is a fine example of the Romanesque style of the twelfth century. The communal oven gives a glimpse of what the furnaces of the seventeenth century were.
Bargème, remarkale village in Var
Bargème is part of one of the most beautiful villages in France. Dominated by the towers of its medieval castle partly destroyed by wars and time, this classified site will delight lovers of old stones and medieval heritage. Indeed, the medieval village still includes the ruins of castles, some old houses and old defensive village including two fortified gates dating from the sixteenth century.
The alleys of Bargème are an invitation to travel back in time with magnificent houses decorated with vaults and alleys with flowers. Many art craftsmen exhibit during the summer season.
To further appreciate the walk, it is forbidden to drive there which adds to the pleasure of discovering this charming village. The village is near La Bastide, another fortified village (6km), La Roque-Esclapon (7km).
After this excursion rich in discovery, it will be time to join your campsite to enjoy the last hours of sun.

The Priory of Notre-Dame de Ganagobie in Provence
Only 1 hour from your campsite La Verdière, enjoy your stay to visit the most famous abbey of the Alpes de Haute-Provence: Ganagobie Priory.
Take advantage of your stay to visit the most famous abbey of the Alpes de Haute-Provence: the Priory of Ganagobie. Indeed, this abbey contains a pavement of exceptional polychrome medieval mosaics. Perched on a plateau overlooking the river Durance, this Priory has a very long history. It was built in the 10th century and was often coveted because of its privileged location.
Throughout the Middle Ages, this abbey holds an important place in the region until the Black Death and especially the wars of religion ravage the country. Order is given by the governor of Provence to destroy the house of the Priory and the vault of the church so that Protestants do not settle there.
Some monks who restored it with little means survived until the revolution. Then, while partially destroyed during the insurrections, it was sold as national property.
In 1891, the owner of the estate which is none other than that of the castle of Malijai, yields what remains of the priory to the Benedictines. These exile in Italy then return in 1922. Meanwhile, the mosaics had been discovered. After roads are finally paved, which allow access to the large excavation equipment on the site, reconstruction of the church can begin from 1960. In parallel, the mosaics are restored in the workshops of the Historic Monuments to be replaced in 1986 to the delight of the visitors.
The Priory of Notre-Dame de Ganagobie : the production of the treasures of Provence
In 1992, the community of monks resettled and in addition to their contemplative meditation, they made many products that they put on sale, mainly cosmetic products based on essential oil.
In addition to the visit of the church, only allowed, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of Mount Pelvoux and the Alps. And if you want to buy natural products, come to the shop where you will find: balms, honey, jam, perfume.
The monks sell all these products in order to maintain the Priory and its church in good condition, to the delight of visitors who come more and more numerous.
Be the next ones to come and see the treasures of Ganagobie by booking your campsite in Provence or your cottage in the Verdon
