The Canyon of Verdon, one of the most beautiful natural parks in Europe.

The Verdon Regional Natural Park, in the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region, bears the name of the river which has shaped over the centuries these magnificent steep gorges, crisscrossed by paths which overlook superb Mediterranean panoramas.

The Verdon stretches over 165 km and has a storage capacity of 434 million m3 of high quality fresh water, a precious reserve for supplying fresh water throughout Provence and the French Riviera. The depth of the gorges is 250 to 700 meters. Their width varies from 6 to 100 meters at the level of the Verdon river and from 200 to 1500 meters taking the distance between the summits of the gorges.

Hikers will find the departure of paths which will make them discover gorges and plateaus, steep paths along limestone cliffs, paths through the scrubland with lavender scents. We recommend the 9.5 km “Sainte Maxime et les Gorges du Verdon” ride on the GR 99 (which goes to La Verdière campsite) or the ride “La grotte de la Baume bonne”, 6 km, 2 hours on the theme of prehistory.

Mountain biking on a network of 40 km marked. Head west towards Gréoux les Bains or east towards Moustier ste Marie. Climbing the cliffs on nearly 170 routes for all levels.

Barjols

Perched at 386 m above sea level, it overlooks Lake Esparron, the place where the lake becomes winding, not far from the Gréoux les Bains dam. The Esparron de Verdon lake is located downstream from the Grand Canyon du Verdon and the Sainte Croix lake. Covering an area of ​​328 hectares, it consists of two large perpendicular basins, bordered by creeks and cliffs overlooking turquoise waters, and gorges with calm waters, easily accessible by canoe, and extraordinarily wild.

This lake was created in 1967. It supplies domestic and agricultural water to 116 municipalities, including Marseille, Toulon and Aix-en-Provence.

The village of La Verdière in Verdon

This picturesque village in the Haut-Var is built on a small hill, around a stately castle of the tenth century. The winding and narrow lanes are organized around the castle.

The castle of la Verdière

Former fortress in the heart of the Verdon, the castle was erected in the year 980 by the Counts of Castellane, a very ancient Provencal line that offered the Kingdom, among other important figures, a hundred knights of Saint John of Jerusalem actively participating in crusades.

Organized around two rooms, the fortress could from the beginning of its construction accommodate 300 armed men to guard the road from Arles to Castellane.

History of the castle of La Verdière

From the thirteenth century, the house of Ventimiglia takes possession of the castle and opens a large building site transformation, making him lose its military character. A dungeon is added to the original building which is enlarged. The former little chapel at the foot of the castle is also transformed into a Romanesque church.

From 1750, Louis Roch de Forbin, a great officer of the King after a busy life of war, returns to live his old days at La Verdière, which gives rise to a series of works to become a place of pleasure, at the image we know today.

The works that were carried out through the centuries gave full consideration to the inhabitants, who complained regularly about this state of permanent corvéeability. Destroyed, he is promised to demolish but located above the houses, nobody dared take this risk.

The private castle of La Verdière is one of the biggest in Provence.

The city of Riez
